Heatstroke: It Happens Faster Than You Think

With temperatures rising, it’s important to remember that our furry friends feel the heat too. Pets can’t cool themselves like we do—they rely mostly on panting, which isn’t always enough in hot weather.
Heatstroke is a serious, life-threatening condition that can lead to organ failure, brain damage, or even death. Short-faced breeds (brachycephalic), overweight pets, and senior or very young animals are especially at risk.
Warning signs include:
• Heavy or rapid panting
• Excessive drooling
• Bright red gums or tongue
• Lethargy, weakness, stumbling, or collapse
• Vomiting
• Seizures
• Body hot to the touch
How to keep your pet cool:
• Always provide fresh, cool water
• Ensure access to shade with good airflow
• Walk pets early in the morning or evening and avoid hot pavement
• Use cooling mats, damp towels, or fans
• Never leave pets unattended in cars
If you suspect heatstroke:
Gently wet your pet with cool (not ice-cold) water and seek veterinary care immediately.
